Mark’s Choice Red Wine Pack
Mencia | Ribeira Sacra, Spain | Guímaro, Rodríguez Péres | 2017
I find myself drinking more and more wines from Spain. The amount of small independent winemakers crafting exceptional wines at great prices is unrivalled and Guimaro is one such winemaker. The winery is run by Pedro Rodriguez who took over the small family winery in Ribera Sacra helping to put the region firmly on the map by rejuvenating old vine vineyards and making fantastic wines. This particular wine is a blend made predominantly with the grape varietal Mencia. It is a lighter style of wine that shows wildberries and herbs but punches way above its weight in terms of quality and value.
Primitivo | Puglia I.G.T., Italy | A-Mano | 2017
Made by winemaking couple Elvezia Sbalchiero and Mark Shannon, a winemaker hailing from California, this a wine steeped in Italian heritage but made in the modern style. The wines are made from 70-100 year old vines and are of exceptional quality. Blackberries, cherries, cocoa and liquorice are here in abundance, making up a hugely complex and satisfying wine.
Syrah Grenache | Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, France | Famille de Boel | 2018
The Rhone is one if not my favourite red wine region in the world and one of the places in France where you can still get good value for money. This CDR comes from a tiny vineyard run by another husband and wife team, Nelly and Arnaud De Boel. 2018 was the first vintage for this wine but don’t be mistaken this is a top class wine which also happens to be sold by the glass in 3 star Michelin restaurant Anne Sophie Pic in Paris. Lots of dark black and red fruits make a full bodied and ripe style CDR that is drinking beautifully just now.
